OH-16: John Boccieri(D) - A "Citizen Journalist's Take" on the Energy Issue

I spend an incredible amount of time at this keyboard writing about the Congressional Race that's brewing here in OH's 16th District. I can come across "gems" that make the whole process of reaching out to the netroots community a pleasure. "Citizen Journalism" is one of today's polical heroes in The Netroots Nation. Today, I happened to stumble upon one of those beauties in The Canton Repository's, "Letters to the Editor":

The present energy crisis has become an important issue in the lives of all Americans and in the political debate. To see where each candidate for the 16th Congressional stands, I went to both state Sen. Kirk Schuring's and state Sen. John Boccieri's Web sites.

The Schuring sites reads: "Kirk believes we need to look at both long term and short-term solutions to our energy problems. … We need start immediately doing more to take advantage of the natural resources in our own backyard, as well as look to alternative energy solutions that won't put a burden on the economy and on the pocket book of citizens of our community."

Schuring has also publicly stated that opening the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and more of America's coastal waters to drilling is a "short-term" solution to high gas prices.

I guess that to him, short-term is 20 years because that's how long it will take to get oil from those two objectives.

The Boccieri energy plan includes the following: "Require oil companies to drill on the 68 million U.S. acres" they already hold leases to; "invest in next-generation biofuels that can be grown in the 16th District; build new local refineries to process biofuels and other next-generation fuel sources; create an Apollo program to revolutionize our energy sources": invest in cutting-edge technologies like wind, solar, clean coal and biomass power; and free us from oil dependence forever.

Between the two candidates, it is clear that only John Boccieri has "short-term" solutions to the oil crisis.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame Festivities have officially begun. Whether or not you are a pro football fan, the week ahead is going to be an exciting one.

A special thanks goes out to everyone who helped us in the Rittman Sleepwalker Parade and to those who made phone calls and knocked on doors. Our campaign contacted more voters this week than any previous week in the general election cycle. OH-16: How's Your Economy?

I was sitting here looking over this morning's e-mails and looking at the "stock market advisories", when this nefarious question popped into my head. How's your economy after almost eight years of "Bush-enomics"?

Well, a look at historical Dow Jones Industrial Index closing numbers lead me down a mathematical path. I found out that the old axiom about the stock market growing at a rate of 8%-12% per annum has been proven untrue under the "Bush/Cheney Watch". Stay with me here.

On January 28, 2000, the DJI closed at 10,739. On July 29, 2008, the DJI closed at 11,398. Now, let's look at the reality of "delta".

11,398 - 10, 739 = 659 points
659/11,398 = 0.0578 (points divided by points = a ratio)
0.0578 x 100% = 5.78% (this represents "total delta" over the 7-1/2 year run"
5.78%/7.5 years = 0.771% per annum over the run (divide by 12 to get monthly "delta")

I don't know how that works out for your IRA or 401k, but I'm guessing it's not moving mountains for the average middle-class American worker. So, I ask, again...

"How's your economy?"

REMINDER: Massillon Backyard Economic Event Saturday

Canton, OH – At 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 26, U.S. Congressional Candidate John Boccieri (OH-16) will discuss the economy with local residents at a backyard barbeque in Massillon . The event is part of a series of economic discussions across the 16th Congressional District.

Attendees are invited to share their concerns about the economy and tell their own stories about jobs, health care, housing, pensions, or any other aspect of the economic squeeze. Boccieri will answer questions about his plans to turn around the economy and restore prosperity for Ohio ’s working families.
